Support and education in breastfeeding, introducing solids and parenting

Everyone knows that breastfeeding is the natural way to feed a baby and that it offers countless health protections and many other benefits to both mother and baby. However, in our society, many women struggle and give up much earlier than they intended. I believe that with accurate, evidence-based information, and mother-centred, empathetic support, women can find breastfeeding enjoyable, rewarding and empowering. It’s my aim to help mothers have a positive experience of breastfeeding their child for as long as they wish.

“I wish I’d known that I would end up actually enjoying breastfeeding, not just out of pride, but simply for the act itself and for the moments of calm with my son.”

I began my working life as a journalist, but after the births of my three children, I developed a fascination for all things birth and breastfeeding related and decided to train first as a birth doula and then as an NCT Breastfeeding Counsellor.

Since 2009, I have been facilitating breastfeeding, introducing solids and parenting classes. From September 2009 until March 2019, together with a team of colleagues, I ran a weekly breastfeeding drop-in at my home in Queen’s Park.

I just wanted to take a moment to thank Cordelia Uys for her support and the wealth of experience, knowledge and expertise she shares with such genuine care. We are 13 months into our breastfeeding journey so far and I feel immensely thankful and proud! Looking back over the past year from the very first feed and beyond (our support began when we did an antenatal NCT breastfeeding workshop with Cordelia), the guidance we received has been invaluable for overcoming obstacles in order for us to continue breastfeeding. From knowing how to discern and dodge unhelpful advice from some well meaning (though ill-informed) health professionals regarding feeding and lactation, to navigating different feeding positions following the physical discomfort of a challenging birth. Being introduced to the side-lying position for instance was a game-changer for us, and began our co-sleeping journey which I am also so grateful for. I would also like to add that I so appreciate Cordelia's boldness and assertiveness in saying what is necessary to advocate for mother and baby. It has such a ripple effect, and I feel all the more confident for it! The support we have received along the way has inspired me to consider that at some point in the future I'd love to support others on their journey. Who knows when our breastfeeding journey will come to a close, for now we are carrying on!” - Robyn

We made it! 6 months today of exclusive breastfeeding. I’m from a formula feeding family so I owe this 100% to Cordelia Uys, her Blossom Antenatal and NCT classes, and to being a member of NWL Breastfeeding, the Facebook group she set up with some local mothers.” - Gwyneth

“I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for being so caring, helpful, resourceful and making me (and others, I’m sure) feel supported and validated in our journey as mothers. The world is a better place thanks to people like you.” - Dana

“Hello Cordelia, I met you with my first son in 2019. We had some help with my son and I attended your wonderful drop in feeding sessions where, after a NICU start and a formula fed baby, you all gave me the confidence to carry on. I stopped  feeding him after two years due to being pregnant with my second son. After another NICU start I felt myself spiraling into anxiety. That’s when I had a zoom with you. You sorted his latch out straight away but you mainly gave me the strength that I needed. I cannot thank you enough for normalising my anxieties and for your words of encouragement. It was exactly what I needed at a time when I felt that the advice was to medicate (definitely didn’t think I needed that). So, after just ending my feeding journey with my second (made it to 3 years of feeding him) I just wanted to thank you so much for the work that you do for new families. I will always think of you and your wonderful support group when I think about the early years. I am so proud of the 5 years that I have breastfed.” - Fiona
